[R] need help with make failing for R 1.6.1 in Solaris 8

You have a mysterious ssh_z prepended to all the symbols.

Almost certainly you have a non-standard zlib.h/zconh.h in your include
path which is not matching your libz.{a,so}.  Install the real zlib 1.1.4
instead.
