[R] configure error for R-2.0.1

Things do work on that platform, so you're probably missing an RPM or
two. My first guess would be

> rpm -qf `which g77`
gcc-g77-3.3.3-33

and you likely need a bunch of -devel packages too (readline-devel,
XFree86-devel, etc.)
