[R] how to avoid grid overlapping in a boxplot

Given the following chart: i.e. a boxplot with a grid

boxplot(x~y)
grid(nx=NA,ny=NULL)

my question: how to avoid the overlapping of boxes (and whiskers) by grid
lines?
